There are an endless number of reasons why your performance review did not go as planned. Perhaps you were blindsided or even knew it was coming, either way there is hope. Yes, I am your hope dealer, and dream pusher for today! My goal is to provide somewhat of an action plan, a way to come back strong from a negative performance experience. Look for the latest and greatest regarding your team, department, organization. Don’t overlook the industry, and profession outlook as well. It doesn't happen right away.
When we are new to the position, just starting our career, the world is our oyster, and the opportunities are endless.Then maybe at some point along the way, boldness gave way to a lack of confidence in ourselves and our careers. As we have conversations around gender equality and diverse inclusion, it is necessary to mention the vast gap in confidence that separates the sexes. The gap widens when considering intersectionality - women who are also a minority. In an article titled "The Confidency Gap", Claire Shipman and Katty Kay state that "confidence is a belief in one’s ability to succeed, a belief that stimulates action. In turn, taking action bolsters one’s belief in one’s ability to succeed.” COMA - (n) a state of deep unconsciousness that lasts for a prolonged or indefinite period. We acknowledge there is a sufficient amount of much motivational, inspirational and empowerment literature, videos, and journals. For every niche, purpose and pursuit. This one is none of that. This is simply a wake-up call!

I recall in charm school being taught the formalities of etiquette. We were taught table manners, conversational protocol and how to be confident but in an unassuming 2nd position sort of way. This week we are defiant! We embark on an exercise to take 1st position, be engaged & S.W.O.T. ourselves with pride! Taking a pause, a moment, to think only of OUR career, business & life goals. I love it! There are certain moments in our lives that we recall as life changing & life altering. In this post I will be transparent about a defining, or should I say re-defining moment in my professional life.
At the time I was working night shift for the local sheriff's department. That was my permanent job. At the same time I was honeymooning with a temporary agency as a receptionist on the day shift. I was young and full of energy! In my early 20's and a recent college graduate I had the rest of my life in front of me. Which in my innocence, included conquering the professional world and offering my unbelievable skills as a phenomenal Leader and "smart chic" to the globe. It was a slow night, and there was a lull in the usual brisk pace of night court life. Lisa (named changed to protect the innocent) called me over to her look at her green screen.
